[ARCHIVED] Investigation and Remediation Efforts Underway Following Diesel Fuel Leak at Shell Gas Station

Exterior of Shell gas station located at the intersection of N. Fairfield and Dayton-Xenia Road.

The City of Beavercreek recently received a report from the State Fire Marshal’s Bureau of Underground Storage Tank Regulations (BUSTR) regarding a diesel fuel leak at the Shell gas station located at the intersection of N. Fairfield and Dayton-Xenia Road.

The incident was first reported on December 18, 2024, when a resident noticed a sheen in the Little Beaver Creek near N. Fairfield Road. The city promptly notified the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which initiated an investigation that same day.

Following the initial discovery, the gas station was closed on December 19, 2024, and a three-month investigation was conducted by BUSTR. The investigation confirmed a diesel fuel leak from the underground storage tanks at the site.

Since then, the following actions have been taken to mitigate the impact and prevent further contamination:

  • The gas station and convenience store have remained closed.
  • Diesel fuel tanks at the site have been completely emptied and removed.
  • Gasoline storage tanks have been emptied.

Remediation efforts are ongoing. The tank cavity, where the diesel storage tank was located, will remain open to allow for further excavation if necessary to remove any contaminated soil. Testing and remediation efforts are being conducted in strict accordance with BUSTR regulations.

The risk to domestic wells is considered extremely low due to the site’s location and the estimated amount of diesel fuel that leaked, which is approximately 700 gallons, according to the report. To date, no reports of suspected contamination have been received, and there have been no reports of contamination to drinking water. Should such a risk arise, the city will work closely with investigating agencies to inform residents immediately.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing and being led entirely by the State Fire Marshal’s Bureau of Underground Storage Tank Regulations (BUSTR). For additional questions, contact BUSTR at Web.BUSTR@com.state.oh.us or by calling (614) 752-7938.
