Shakertown Road Improvement Project

About the Project

The City of Beavercreek, in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), is planning improvements to approximately 0.65 miles of Shakertown Road (County Road 71), from Carthage Drive to Southern Belle Boulevard. This project - ODOT Project Number 119964 - aims to enhance both roadway and pedestrian safety and accessibility.

Planned improvements include:

  • Widening the existing two-lane road to three lanes
  • Installing sidewalks on both sides of the roadway
  • Upgrading drainage infrastructure, including new curbs, gutters, and storm sewers

Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2027 and is expected to be completed by fall 2028. Right-of-way acquisition will be required.

Funding

This project is made possible through a partnership between the City of Beavercreek and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), with additional support from local and state transportation improvement funds. This project is estimated to cost approximately $3.2 million. The majority of the funding - about 75%, or $2.4 million - will come from the Ohio Department of Transportation. The remaining 25%, or $800,000, will be covered by city street levy dollars.

Public Input

The city thanks everyone who provided comments and shared concerns with staff and project representatives during the public involvement meeting held on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2025. After reviewing the feedback received, the city understands the community’s desire to limit permanent right-of-way impacts to the greatest extent possible and to reduce vehicle speeds along the corridor.

As a result, several design adjustments are currently underway. These changes include limiting treelawn widths to keep the proposed sidewalk and roadway widening within the existing right-of-way; placing required storm sewer infrastructure within storm sewer easements rather than permanent right-of-way, and locating it closer to the roadway where feasible; and minimizing tree removal to the greatest extent possible.

In addition, the intersection of Merrick Road/Jayell Drive and Shakertown Road will be realigned so the intersections align directly across from one another, rather than remaining offset as they are today. This improvement will address an existing safety concern related to conflicting left-turn movements.

Many residents also expressed concerns about speed limits along the corridor and on Shakertown Road more broadly. The Engineering Division is currently compiling information for council’s consideration of an ordinance to reduce the speed limit on Shakertown Road to 35 mph. Residents are encouraged to review upcoming council meeting agendas for additional details on this topic.
